Garson Kanin was a writer and director of plays and films. He is best remembered for his collaborations with his wife, actress Ruth Gordon. Together, they wrote the Spencer Tracy/Katharine Hepburn film comedies “Adam’s Rib” (1949) and “Pat and Mike” (1952), both directed by George Cukor. He also wrote the play “Born Yesterday” (1946) and directed the Broadway runs of “The Diary of Anne Frank” in 1955 and the musical “Funny Girl” in 1964. According to Sheilah Graham’s book, he lived at the Garden of Allah in the 1950s. In 1942 he locked himself into a villa there with Katharine Hepburn, his brother Michael and Ring Lardner Jnr, to write the screenplay for “Woman of the Year”–and did it in 5 days!
