Odd couple: Alla Nazimova and Sergei (“Seryozha”) Golovin a few days after their marriage in 1899

In the mid-1920s, when Alla Nazimova’s film career was falling apart, Charles Bryant, her faux husband of 12 years, betrayed her by announcing he was marrying someone else. During this process, it was revealed to the public that one of Broadway’s most famous couples had never actually tied the knot. The reason they hadn’t is because Nazimova was still married to a man she had left behind in Russia.
