Donald Ogden Stewart - resident of the Garden of Allah Hotel

The Garden of Allah was especially popular with writers and one of the most prominent was Donald Ogden Stewart. He was a member of the Algonquin Round Table through which he became friends with Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, George S. Kaufman, and Ernest Hemingway (he was the model for Bill Gorton in Hemingway’s “The Sun Also Rises”). He wrote the screenplays for “Marie Antoinette” (1938), “The Philadelphia Story” (1940) (or which he won the Oscar), “A Woman’s Face” (1941), and “Life with Father” (1947) to name but a few.
